Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship

The Centre of African Studies is pleased to announce the Nyerere postgraduate scholarship for candidates for our MSc. in Africa and International Development. The Nyerere Postgraduate scholarship provides funding to talented Tanzanian students who want to follow Nyerere’s path and study at Edinburgh University.

The Centre of African Studies is offering a one year postgraduate scholarship to a student housing in Tanzania as a result of the generous support of a donor. This will allow them to study a Master’s-level program at the Centre of African Studies.

The University of Edinburgh is a university that conducts research in Edinburgh, Scotland. The university was officially opened by King James VI in 1583. It is one of Scotland’s oldest universities, and the sixth-oldest in continuous operation in English-speaking countries.

The university was a key player in Edinburgh’s transformation into a major intellectual hub during the Scottish Enlightenment. It also contributed to the nickname “Athens of the North”. The University of Edinburgh is a member of many research-intensive universities associations, including the Coimbra Group and League of European Research Universities.

Five main campuses are located in Edinburgh by the University of Edinburgh. These include buildings of historic and architectural importance, such as the Old Town. It receives over 60,000 undergraduate applications each year and is the second most famous university in the UK.

With 35,375 students, the university was the eighth-largest in terms of enrolment in the UK. In 2019, the University of Edinburgh had seventh highest average UCAS points of any British university for new entrants.

The university has continued to be linked to the British royals, having had Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh as its chancellor between 1953 and 2010 and Anne Princess Royal since March 2011. The University of Edinburgh was ranked 4th in research power and 9th in GPA by British universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

These results also showed that more than 35% (or Scotland’s top-ranked) 4* research was conducted at the university. The University of Edinburgh was ranked 13th in The Sunday Times’ 10-year average (1998-2007), which is based on performance at constant league tables.

According to THE Global Employability University Ranking 2015, Edinburgh was ranked 4th in the UK and 23rd worldwide for graduate employability. This ranking was based on votes from international recruiters. According to a 2015 government report, the university was among the two Scottish universities that elite London-based recruitment agencies considered for candidates in financial services and investment banking.

The 2021 Aggregate ranking of Top Universities ranked the University of Edinburgh 24th in the World and 5th in UK. This league table is based on three major university rankings: QS, ARWU and THE.

The U.S. News & World Report 2022 ranked the university 32nd worldwide and 5th in the nation. According to the 2021 World Reputation Rankings, Edinburgh was ranked 30th globally and 6th nationally. The SCImago Institutions Rankings ranked the University of Edinburgh as 63rd out of all universities worldwide in 2021.

The Nyerere Postgraduate Scholarship will pay tuition fees and provide an annual stipend at PS13,500.

  • A scholarship will be awarded to a student house in Tanzania if they are accepted on a full time basis for the MSc. in Africa and International Development.
  • For the scholarship application, applicants must submit a personal statement that clearly explains why they are applying. It should also include their experiences and aspirations in Africa and International Development.
  • To be eligible for the scholarship, you must arrange for two referees who will submit letters of support.
